Refocus on Recovery 2012 conference
Event date: 05/03/2012 Time: 09:00

This three day event includes seven masterclasses followed by an international conference. It has been organised by the Section for Recovery in the Institute for Psychiatry at King's College London and the national mental health charity, Rethink Mental Illness.

For more information and to register, please visit the conference website here.

The seven masterclasses (running from 9am until 12 noon on 5 March 2012) are:

1. Working as a recovery-oriented professional

2. Organisational change and Recovery (ImROC)

3. Improving well-being

4. Developing recovery values in the workforce

5. Using lived experience as a trainer

6. Working as a peer worker

7. Fostering social activism

The masterclasses will be followed by an international conference with conceptual, methodological and empirical papers on the following four conference themes:

Theme 1: Social rights and activism
How can an inclusive society and communities be fostered? What empowers people who experience mental illness? Do political and social activism increase citizenship? Do ideas of recovery, well-being and social inclusion help or hinder citizenship?

Theme 2: Peer-support: lived experience and role models
How can the expertise of lived experience inform mental health services to fully support recovery? Why are role models important to recovery? Which effective models of peer-support are being developed? How do services change when lived experience is heard and acted on?

Theme 3: Recovery and well-being
Does the term ‘recovery’ accurately describe what matters to people experiencing mental illness? How can people experiencing mental illness increase their well-being? What is the role of self-management? Can the experience of mental illness be an asset? How do mental health services increase, or reduce, well-being?

Theme 4: Mental health services and recovery: implementing change
What can mental health services do to support recovery? What professional values and service user expectations need to change? What is involved in organisational transformation towards a focus on recovery, well-being and social inclusion? Does the personalisation agenda make a difference?
