About self-harm

Self-harm is a common reason for presentation to the Emergency Department

Studies show that at least 1 in 100 people who go to the Emergency Department in the UK do so as a result of self-harm. Most people self-poison or ‘overdose’ but other forms of self-harm are also seen including self-cutting and self-burning.

People who self-harm need physical and mental health input

People self-harm for a variety of reasons. Some of the people we see have attempted to end their life while others feel they are unable to cope for a whole range of reasons. It is very important that each person’s physical health and mental health is fully assessed so that we can provide them with the best care, treatment and support possible.
