Country partnerships

As capacity building partnerships grow, there can be benefits to expanding the relationship to the national level and developing country partnerships. These links engage with a wide range of partnerships on both sides and crucially are able to advise and support Ministries of Health and the education and health sectors in general.

The first national capacity building link we have is with Somaliland and has been developed in close partnership with Tropical Health and Education Trust (THET). Renewing this 10 year partnership, THET and King’s Health Partners have taken further steps to develop their shared agenda and create a new centre of activity based at the new Global Health offices at Denmark Hill.

Case Study - Somaliland
The work in Somaliland started in 2000 when a UK-based Somali health professional led a factfinding trip to Somaliland. Work initially focused on training staff to improve standards of care in a maternity hospital and later providing academic support to a new medical school. The King’s College Hospital/THET/Somaliland/Partnership (KTSP)
expanded into supporting other health institutions, professional associations, regional health authorities and the Ministry of Health and Labour. Major grants from Comic Relief (2004), the European Commission (2009) and from the UK’s Department of International Development (2007 and 2010) were secured and a Health Systems Strengthening Programme commenced in 2007. Additional grants have recently been awarded to extend the programme for another three years.

Some key achievements over the last 10 years include:
  • Graduation of the first locally-trained doctors, totalling 53 since 2007
  • Establishment of a national medical internship programme
  • Weekly support through distance learning for isolated health professionals
  • Development of a Nurse Tutor Training course with the graduation of 27 new tutors
  • Development of a national nursing curriculum and support for the 5 nursing schools
  • Creation of a revolving drug fund in the main referral hospital
  • Increased membership the Somaliland Medical and Nursing/Midwifery Associations
  • Creation of a Health Professional Council for regulation within the health sector
  • Mentoring of Ministry of Health staff
