South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust
With a history that dates back to the founding in 1247 of Bethlem Royal Hospital - the oldest psychiatric institution in the world - South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) provides the most extensive portfolio of mental health services in the UK, supported by internationally recognised training and research.
A unique clinical and academic partnership between the Trust and the co-located Institute of Psychiatry, part of King’s College London means that lessons learnt from research are translated directly into better treatment locally, throughout the UK and internationally.
The Trust is increasingly focused on promoting mental health and well-being rather than simply responding to severe mental illness. The provision of integrated adult services enables the Trust to address both people’s mental health and social care needs. In particular the Trust is focusing more on early intervention, getting help to people sooner in the course of illnesses such as psychosis and dementia, and in supporting people with mental health problems at an earlier stage in their lives, especially younger people.
- SLaM provides a full range of mental health services for people of all ages, from over 100 community-based sites across south London and three psychiatric hospitals (as well as units based on three acute hospital sites)
- The Trust was rated clinically ‘excellent’, and ‘good’ for use of resources by the Healthcare Commission in 2009
- The Trust provides mental health and substance misuse services for people living in the London Boroughs of Croydon, Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham, and substance misuse services in Bexley, Greenwich and Bromley
- Specialist services are provided to people from across the UK
- Adult mental health and social care services are fully integrated
- SLaM is home to the only mental health Biomedical Research Centre in the UK
- Around 600,000 patient contacts are provided a year
- Annual turnover is around £350 million
