Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt praised the new Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital after visiting it for the first time on Thursday 9 February.
He tweeted ‘Thank you to staff @GSTTnhs for my tour of Guy's Cancer Centre. You're leading the way in providing world class cancer care & treatment.’
The Health Secretary met staff and patients in the Welcome Village, Outpatients Village and Radiotherapy Village before filming an interview with BBC Health Editor Hugh Pym in a radiotherapy treatment area.
The new Cancer Centre opened to patients in September 2016 and is the first centre in Europe to provide radiotherapy treatment above ground level – following feedback from cancer survivors who said future patients and staff would benefit hugely from a lighter and brighter environment.
It also includes a King’s College London research floor – the Innovation Hub – so that frontline clinicians and researchers work side by side to the benefit of patients.
