Professor Dinesh Bhugra, a psychiatrist at the Institute of Psychiatry and the South London and Maudsley, has been awarded the title of CBE in the 2012 New Year’s Honours. Other alumni from King’s College London received honours as well as one of King’s College Hospital’s loyal volunteers, Betty Foxwell.
Professor Dinesh Bhugra is Chair of Mental Health and Cultural Diversity at the Institute of Psychiatry (IoP) at King’s College London and Honorary Consultant at South London and Maudsley (SLaM). He was awarded the title of CBE for services to psychiatry.
Earlier this year, Professor Bhugra became the first psychiatrist from the UK to be elected President Elect of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA). He is currently leading on a 23-country project looking at recruitment of medical students into psychiatry.
Professor Bhugra says: “It is a great honour and I am particularly delighted as the honour recognises psychiatry and the exciting and hard work we do in the field. It would not have been possible without the support of so many colleagues both in SLaM and in the IoP and I would like to pay tribute to them for their sterling support.”
Professor Shitij Kapur, Dean and Head of School at the Institute of Psychiatry says: “Dinesh’s research has significantly enriched our portfolio of scholarship, and his recent accomplishments as the President of the Royal College and his election as the President of the WPA will allow Dinesh to leave a lasting impact on the profession of psychiatry and medicine.”
At King’s College Hospital, Betty Foxwell – a lady who worked as a volunteer at the Trust and raised money to improve the lives of kidney transplant patients - was honoured with an MBE.
Several alumni from King’s College London also received honours. Read more on the College’s website here.
