Education and Training for You – our later career clinicians
Learn about the education and training opportunities available to later career clinicians across King’s Health Partners.
At King’s Health Partners we are committed to supporting your continual study, learning and professional development.
The King’s Health Partners Education Academy brings together our Clinical Academic Group (CAG) education and training leads, with experts in their field, to facilitate a broad and unique spectrum of training and education that supports the very best patient care and treatment. They unite clinical and academic experts from our CAGs, who provide the foundations of our partnership and ensure integrated ways of working across research, education and clinical practice within King’s Health Partners.
If you’re a later career clinician, for example someone with more than ten years’ experience in your specialty and working at King’s College London or one of our leading NHS Foundation Trusts – Guy’s and St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital or South London and Maudsley – we offer a range of exceptional education and training opportunities for you.
Here are some of the ways our partnership supports you to professionally develop and learn throughout your career at King’s Health Partners:
1. Our e-learning platform – the Learning Hub
Our Learning Hub is a free online resource available to you as a part of the King’s Health Partners community and we are continually adding courses, resources and activities.
There are currently more than 100 resources available. Below, we’ve listed just some examples of the types of resources available that may interest you as a later career clinician:
Communication and decision-making
-
Good communication with patients and staff is vital to ensure good quality care. Communication in Healthcare reminds you of the value of verbal and non-verbal communication skills in healthcare and takes approximately an hour to complete.
-
The Clinical Decision-Making module helps practitioners reflect on their own clinical decision making and offers strategies to help teach these skills.
-
The Deaf Awareness in Healthcare module uses simulated scenarios to demonstrate some of the obstacles these patients face when accessing health services, and practical ways to improve your communication skills with deaf or hard of hearing people.
Mind & Body resources
- At King’s Health Partners, we are committed to joining up mental and physical healthcare, training and research to improve health outcomes for our patients and service users. Our Mind and Body Healthcare: Addressing mental and physical health needs course explains how physical and mental health commonly influence each other, and helps you recognise the additional health needs of patients.
Professional development
- Developing Leadership Skills is a collection of resources on how to hone your leadership skills. From self-paced online resources to one-off events and structured programmes, this collection caters for the needs of healthcare professionals at different stages of their career.
- Realising Your Potential shares a collection of inspiring videos and discussions from King's Health Partners “Realising Your Potential” events. The series is approximately one hour and a half in length. You will have the opportunity to hear speakers share their personal stories and professional wisdom on how to achieve career goals as an individual, or help others develop their full potential within a diverse team or more widely across your organisation.
- Our healthcare system faces increasing challenges to deliver high levels of care at efficient costs. The Public Health: Healthcare in England module introduces healthcare policy and priority setting.
Patient safety
- A quality improvement (QI) approach to healthcare helps improve clinical processes, patient safety, and outcomes in a systematic way. Take a look at our interactive presentation that takes you through the QI process step-by-step, from putting together the right project team, through to measuring and spreading successful changes.
- Collaborative Care Planning in Long Term Conditions takes roughly an hour to complete. The aim of the module is to help you incorporate self-management techniques to ensure that all your patient consultations are effective.
Dementia
- Barbara’s story - a quarter of patients in UK hospitals have dementia, and the number is growing. This original training film produced by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust has been used to raise awareness of dementia with our staff, staff in other hospitals nationally and across the world including in USA, Germany, Canada, Sweden, and Qatar. Evaluation carried out by South Bank University found that Barbara’s Story made a lasting impression on staff and led to changes in how they do their jobs.
- To complement Barbara’s story, a module titled Understanding Dementia is also available. It was created for clinical support workers, but also offers a quick accessible introduction to dementia for any student or staff member.
2. Our unique King’s Health Partners events
- Our King's Health Partners Clinical Academic Innovation workshop series brings together clinicians, academics, managers and leaders from across King’s Health Partners CAGs and the wider sector to engage with each other on shared strategic priorities. Following the launch of our five-year plan ‘Delivering better health for all through high impact innovation’ we will be hosting an interactive workshop to reflect on some examples of success in how King’s Health Partners. The session is taking place on 11 November and you can catch-up on previous workshops on the Learning Hub.
- The new King's Health Partners Surgical Academy aims to facilitate outstanding surgical science collaborations, support hybrid surgical and implementation trials and improve education for the next generation of surgical trainees. The King's Health Partners Surgical Academy workshop, organised by Prof Prokar Dasgupta, our recently appointed Professor of Surgery, is taking place on 29 October 2020. The session will explore the vision for King’s Health Partners Surgical Academy and how we plan to bring surgeons across our partnership together to push for surgical excellence.

3. Meet experts across the globe in our online educational series
In the absence of fully established peer-reviewed data, learnings from clinical practice have been vital during the pandemic. That’s why in April 2020, our Education Academy began the online series ‘Global: How I manage COVID-19 patients – meet the expert’. The series brings together experts from around the world to discuss their learning from COVID-19 and answer pressing questions about how to manage patients.
Keep any eye on our events pages and Twitter for the next sessions – they take place every Tuesday at 1pm.
