First plasma recipient meets her donor

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust's patient Ann Kitchen was the first person in the country to receive a blood plasma treatment for COVID-19 as part of a nationwide clinical trial. She was filmed meeting the man whose donation helped her to recover, Kugan, an A&E charge nurse.

The result was a very moving film, designed to attract more donors to sign up to the study. The story ran on BBC Breakfast, BBC News at One, BBC News Channel and BBC World News, with mentions of St Thomas’ Hospital. On the day it aired, 2,500 online registrations to donate plasma were submitted, an increase of at least 25% compared with days during the previous two weeks.
