Service delivery and capacity building

Our mission to strengthen education and training, clinical services and research fits exactly with requests from our low and middle income country partners to support their own health workforce, strengthen clinical services and build a strong research infrastructure.

We have a strong tradition and a wealth of experience in health-related capacity building. These partnerships with institutions or regions in low and middle income countries place particular emphasis on sustainability and mutual respect.

There is significant potential for capacity building partnerships to work more closely together in order to identify potential synergies, to learn from shared experiences, to engage with a wider pool of staff and to develop critical mass in particular regions or sectors. This will be facilitated by Mr Andy Leather through the Global Health Offices.

Case Study - Maudsley International
Maudsley International was founded in 2008 as a joint initiative of the Institute of Psychiatry and the South London and Maudsley Foundation NHS Trust. The aim is to undertake teaching, training and consultancy related to research, clinical practice and policy in the field of mental health worldwide.

Maudsley International offers the knowledge, skills and support necessary to assist in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of training, services and policies. Focus is placed on ensuring that this support is cost-effective, locallyappropriate and tailored to meet the specific mental health needs of neighbourhoods, regions and countries.

This work involves collaboration with research institutions, professionals, policy makers and non-governmental organisations to help promote mental health, prevent illness and treat and support individuals and their families.

Maudsley International formed a partnership with Voluntary Service (VSO) to provide volunteer mental health professional to build capacity in Sri Lanka’s mental health services. The first psychologist volunteer is already in place and another is expected
to join the scheme soon.

In addition Maudsley International is developing working partnerships for training and service developments with Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil, the Institute of Mental Health, Belgrade, Serbia and the Traumatic Stress Service of the South London and Maudsley Foundation NHS Trust and the International Organization of Migration in Geneva.
