KHPeople: Prof Laia Bécares
What is your role within King’s Health Partners?
I joined King’s College London in August 2022 as Professor of Social Science and Health in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, SSPP. Within King’s Health Partners (KHP), my role is to strengthen the involvement of the social sciences in both the questions we ask, and the methods we use, to drive health improvement.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I enjoy learning about the research and innovation that takes place within KHP, and connecting with colleagues across disciplines and sectors. I am an interdisciplinary researcher – with formal training in psychology, public health, and social epidemiology – so the opportunity to participate and feed into the multidisciplinary, translational work of KHP is very fulfilling.
What inspired you to get into this work?
We live in an unequal society where the circumstances in which we are born, live, and work determine our life chances. My research is inspired by the opportunity to address societal inequities that will undoubtedly lead to better health for all.
What are the benefits of working in partnership?
Working in partnership allows us to push the boundaries of our current understandings of the reasons behind, and actions towards, health equity. Working in partnership across disciplines and sectors is extremely enriching and rewarding.
What would be your one career top tip?
Work on societal and health challenges that you are passionate about, and find good, nice people to do this work with.
