“Meet the expert” – global, clinical seminar series

Welcome to King’s Health Partners - “Meet the expert” – global, clinical seminar series which we host in collaboration with our partners the European University Hospital Alliance.

Taking place once a week on Tuesdays at 1pm (GMT/UTC), each session will have a 15-minute expert presentation, followed by 15 minutes for questions and answers with the speaker.

The next seminar is taking place on Tuesday 9 March 2021 with Prof Swee Lay Thein, Chief of the Sickle Cell Branch, National Heart,  Lung and Blood Institutes / National Institutes of Health. The title of her presentation is Treating sickle cell disease – beyond Hydroxyurea. Prof Thein will discuss genetic therapy, recent FDA approved drugs for managing sickle cell plus new developments in the drug pipeline for sickle cell disease.

Dr Thein is Chief of the Sickle Cell Branch, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institutes / National Institutes of Health since March 2015.

Prior to this, she was professor of molecular hematology and consultant hematologist at King’s College London, where she served as clinical director of the Red Cell Centre in King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. At the hospital, she was involved in the care of 800 adult patients with sickle cell disease and other red blood cell disorders. She has participated and directed a wide range of clinical and translational haematology research on inherited anemias, in particular the beta hemoglobin disorders. Her research currently focuses on sickle cell disease: to better understand how a simple mutation in a single gene can cause damage in multiple organs and the extreme variability in sickle cell disease severity, and to accelerate translation of basic discovery to therapeutic application and management.

Prof Anne Greenough, Director of Education and Training, King's Health Partners, will Chair the event.

Prof Jo Howard, consultant haematologist and Honorary Professor in Haemoglobinopathies at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust will be the lead discussant.
