Menopause is a significant life transition that can affect physical health, emotional wellbeing, and mental health. For women living with serious mental illness (SMI), menopause can present additional challenges and may influence symptom management, treatment, and overall quality of life. In this first webinar of the Menopause and Serious Mental Illness three-part series - experts from the fields of gynaecology and psychology will explore the biological and psychological aspects of menopause and their implications for women with SMI.
Professor Haitham Hamoda, Consultant Gynaecologist, will provide an overview of what happens biologically during perimenopause and menopause, including hormonal changes, common symptoms, and the role of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). He will discuss the benefits, risks, and practical considerations of HRT, alongside the potential impact of menopause on mental health and wellbeing.
Dr Nadine Keen, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, will explore the emotional and psychological experiences associated with menopause. Drawing on her expertise in women's mental health, she will discuss assessment approaches, the psychological impact of menopause, evidence-based psychological interventions, and the specific challenges and gaps in care experienced by women living with serious mental illness.
This session aims to increase understanding of menopause, improve awareness of its interaction with mental health, and support attendees to provide informed, compassionate, and person-centred care for women with SMI.
