King’s Health Partners Academic Surgical Grand Round
During 2023, the fourth Thursday of every month will be dedicated to the King’s Health Partners (KHP) Academic Surgical Grand Round from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
The next event in the Surgical Grand Round schedule will be held on Thursday 23 March, 5.30pm-6.30pm, and will cover 'Using technology to improve the teaching of Upper GI Surgery'. The session will be chaired by Mr Abrie Botha, Consultant Upper GI and General Surgeon, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (FT).
Mr Botha directs both bedside and large group surgical education. His clinical and research interests are in innovation in minimal invasive surgery, particularly for achalasia and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.
Topic update 1
The topic update will be split in two parts. The first will be delivered by Mr Will Knight Consultant Upper GI Surgeon, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS FT, on "Endoflip-guided anti-reflux surgery".
Mr Knight has an interest in complex benign upper GI surgery as well as upper GI cancer. He has recently published a collaborative case series of EndoFLIP guided Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy and is now exploring the use of EndoFLIP in tailoring antireflux surgery.
Topic update 2
The second will be delivered by Ms Efstratia Baili, Senior Clinical Fellow, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS FT, on "Benefits of 3D laparoscopy".
After obtaining her MD (2008) and CCT in General Surgery (2018), Ms Baili worked as post-CCT Senior Clinical Fellow in Upper GI-HPB Surgery at Laiko University Hospital, Greece. From 2020 to 2021, she was appointed as Consultant Surgeon in Second Department of Surgery-UGI Unit at Iaso Hospital, Athens, Greece.
She holds a MSc Degree in “Minimally Invasive, Robotic Surgery & Telesurgery” since 2017 and she is an affiliated PhD researcher with NKUA, Greece. Her primary interests focus on minimally invasive oesophagogastric surgery, surgical innovation and new technologies.
Bulkley-Barry-Cooper Surgical Professorial lecture
The Bulkley-Barry-Cooper lecture will be delivered by Dr Silvana Perretta, Upper GI Surgeon, Professor of Surgery, Chief of Foregut and Advanced Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Division, Vice President IRCAD, Strasbourg France, on "Overcoming the challenges of teaching UGI surgery by technology".
Dr Perretta serves as the Vice President of IRCAD France and Director of IHU Education and Surgical Endoscopy fellowship program. Her fields of interest are upper GI surgery, gastro-intestinal physiology, bariatric surgery, interventional endoscopy, surgical education and innovation.
Dr Perretta has been a pioneer in Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES), and actively developed endoscopic platforms, flexible robotics and endoscopic simulators. She authored 146 peer-reviewed publications, has an h-index of 41, and holds 9 patents. She was named Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honor on January 1, 2021 and recently elected Chair of the EAES Flexible Endoscopy Committee, Advisor for the American College of Surgeon Committee on Emerging Surgical Technologies and Education (CESTE) and of the AMEE (An International Association for Medical Education) Surgery Track Steering Committee.
